Tigran Hamasyan - Gypsyology
In 2011 I had the great privilege of hearing the Tigran Hamasyan trio live at the Tel Aviv Jazz festival, while I was in my first year of Jazz school. It was an overwhelming experience, and the memory of it is still very fresh in my mind. Today when listening to Tigran’s music, I still feel what I felt then, perhaps even more deeply so: that he is a master musician, storyteller and virtuoso whose playing is compelling and instantly captivating, that he really “has it all”.
One of the tools I often choose to use when I just can’t fathom the greatness and scope of another artist is to transcribe and play some of his or her music, preferably with other musicians and for an audience. This particular song is one that I’ve played many times and for many different listeners, and it has always generated enthusiasm and had a bigger impact than most other “covers” I’ve played. I think this composition is fantastic and has a very distinct personality and flavor, charm, elegance and simplicity - just like a great song should. I’ve included the album recording (from which I transcribed) but I urge you to look for live versions as I’m sure you will appreciate the Tigran’s stellar performance and enchanting stage presence.
I would say this transcription is at least a medium difficulty level, as the piano writing is elaborate and multilayered and the rhythm is fast and tricky at first. But it’s so beautiful and fun to play, and by the end the energy is so sweeping that it reminds me of a Ravel waltz, spinning faster and faster in a wild fervor, rushing off towards some terrible abyss. I hope you like this one and decide to give it a try - it’s worth the effort!
