Now Vs. Now - Seven Ways
The music of Now Vs Now is a beautiful example of how people evolve and find totally new ways of expressing who they are. This ultra-rhythmic, cross-genre, multi-ethnic music is truly one of a kind, and there is so much to learn and absorb from every one of their compositions and live performances. This trio has been around for a while now, and this video is from their first incarnation with leader and keyboardist Jason Lindner, bassist Panagiotis Andreou and drummer Mark Guiliana. I was shocked and awe-struck when a friend played me this track, and over time worked up to being able to transcribe and play it. Check out this unbelievable performance with very special solos from all three musicians:
This transcription is from the album version, not the live version above, which I also have made but is much longer. The core idea here is rhythmic - 4 groups of 7 eight-notes that make a sort of “clave” on 7 quarter notes. There are moments when you can hear the underlying rhythm of 4 over 7, and there are also many different variations that divide the 7 beats in other ways, with several different melodies and chords. See if you can play this short transcription and let me know if you want to try tackling the long one!
